An accelerometer is a transducer (device that converts a form of energy to another form of energy) that measures acceleration. Accelerometers used in a motion control system can help measure machinery vibration for maintenance purposes. Multiple devices used together provide x-y-z positioning capabilities useful in factory automation and industrial applications. Accelerometers do offer great measurement sensitivity (MEMS level) or a very high G force range, but typically not both, a trade-off between accuracy and capacity.
