Positioning goniometers are instruments that act like linear stages except they are designed to position an object by rotation around a fixed axis. Positioning goniometers typically use a worm drive with a partial worm wheel fixed to the underside of the stage platform meshing with a worm in the base. The worm may be rotated manually or by a motor as in automated positioning systems. Positioning goniometers may be mounted to one another creating goniometer stacked stage giving the combined instrument the ability to work around a globular or rounded surface.
