First Dual Channel AC Induction Motor Controller for Mobile Robots
Roboteq, Inc offers the FIM2360, the world’s first and only dual channel Variable Frequency Drive capable of simultaneously driving two AC induction motors. Each motor can draw up to 60Amps at up to 60V, or 3.6kW per channel.
AC Induction motors are industry workhorses thanks to their simple and inexpensive construction. Commonly used in traction for electric vehicle, thanks to Roboteq’s advanced electronics controls they are now suitable in robotics and automation applications.
The FIM2360 is supporting multiple advanced operating modes, including Scalar Open Loop Volts per Hertz, Fixed Slip Control or Field Oriented Control Torque/Speed modes.
Roboteq’s FIM2360 is ideally suited for use in Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGV’s), Warehouse Automation Robots, Police/Military Robots, personnel carriers, golf cars, materials handling equipment, electric boats, automated guided vehicles, agricultural robots or any other high-power, battery operated applications.
Combined with Roboteq's MGS1600 Magnetic Guide Sensor, the FBL2360 can be used to design an Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) with just two components.
The controller accepts commands from either analog pedal/joystick, standard R/C radio for simple remote-controlled robot applications, USB or RS232 interface. Using the serial port, the FIM2360 can be used to design fully or semi-autonomous robots by connecting it to single board computers, wireless modems or WiFi adapters.
The FIM2360 incorporates a Basic Language Interpreter capable of executing over 50,000 Basic instructions per second. This feature can be used to write powerful scripts for adding custom functions, or for developing automated systems without the need for an external PLC or microcomputer.
The controller's two channels can be operated independently or combined to set the direction and rotation of a vehicle by coordinating the motors on each side (tank-like steering). The two channels can also be joined in order to drive a single AC motor up to 120Amps
The controller includes up to 8 analog, 10 digital and 6 pulse inputs. Four 1A digital outputs are provided for activating lights, valves, brakes or other accessories. The controller’s operation can be optimized using nearly 80 configurable parameters, such as programmable acceleration or deceleration, amps limits, operating voltage range, use of I/O, and more.
A free PC utility is available for configuring, tuning and exercising the motor. The controller can be reprogrammed in the field with the latest features by downloading new operating firmware from Roboteq’s web site.
The FIM2360 is built into a compact 140mm x 140mm x 25mm enclosure with an aluminum bottom plate for efficient conduction cooling.
The FIM2360 is available now to customers worldwide at $595 in single quantities, complete with cable and PC-based configuration software. Product information and software can be downloaded from the company’s web site at www.roboteq.com/index.php/
Founded in 2001 by experts in embedded computing and power electronics, Roboteq’s mission is to develop products and technologies that allow Automation Engineers to build innovative, flexible and affordable mobile robots. Roboteq controllers are now used in over 10000 original robot designs around the world.
