 FRABA has introduced POSITAL MDW, a high-performance linear measurement device that is ideal for many industrial and medical equipment positioning applications. It combines a high-precision magnetic rotary encoder with a robust draw-wire mechanism to provide a measurement range of up to 2 m at a resolution of 35 µm (1.3x10-3 inch). The device is built around a multi-turn absolute magnetic encoder that uses a Hall-effect sensor to measure angular displacements. There are no internal electrical contacts, which means that there is none of the wear that often de-grades the accuracy of devices based on multi-turn potentiometers. Tests con-ducted by the manufacturer have shown negligible loss of accuracy after over more than one million draw/rewind cycles. The POSITAL MDW is easy to incorporate into designs. The unit is compact (46 x 46 x 70 mm or 1.8 x 2.2 x 2.8 inches) and available with either analog or digital (CAN or serial SSI) instrument interfaces.

Compact encoders for PROFINET IO networks PI-certified
 POSITAL announces that their OPTOCODE rotary encoders with PROFINET IO interfaces are now certified for IRT (isochronous real-time) data transfer protocols. The certificate – an industry first for this class of device – was issued by Profibus/Profinet International (PI), the organization responsible for the PROFINET protocol suite. The limits are coming! New legislation will regulate the presence of hazardous substances in electrical equipment
 The Environmental Design of Electrical Equipment (EDEEA) Act, currently before Congress, proposes stringent limits on the amount of hazardous materials that can be used in electroindustry products. The materials include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and two flame retardants. This legislation will provide a uniform national standard for the United States and help ensure that equipment built to US standards will also comply with ‘Restriction on Hazardous Substance' (RoHS) standards for the European Union and China.
