LSI/CSI announces the availability of its new high performance stepper motor controller integrated circuit, designated LS7290. “A huge advantage for our customers is that the low cost LS7290 can replace the expensive L297 in most applications, while providing more programmable micro-steps” according to Pete Visconti, VP Sales and Marketing. This new IC is capable of a large selection of step sizes ranging between full and 1/32 step. The LS7290 is designed to control two-phase bipolar stepper motors or four-phase unipolar stepper motors with minimum burden on the resources of a host micro-controller. For bipolar motors, the LS7290 interfaces with an external Dual Full Bridge Driver such as the L298, which contains a pair of H-bridges driven by the LS7290 PWM and Phase Control outputs. The H-bridges allow for the selection of wide range of motor sizes. For unipolar motors, the LS7290 PWM and Phase Control outputs interface with four AND gates driving four NMOS driver transistors. Inputs to the LS7290 are available to control the step size, step command, motor direction, over-current sense, over-current threshold and inter-step phase drive blanking delays. The programmable inter-step blanking delays allow for delay selection to suit a specific motor resulting in reduced audible motor noise, increased step accuracy, and reduced power dissipation. The basic timing clock can be supplied either from the built-in oscillator or from the system clock. LS7290 features include: - Programmable step sizes: full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32.
- Nominal clock frequency: 8MHz
- Maximum stepping rate: greater than 30k per second
- Programmable inter-step blanking delays: 1.25us, 2.5us, 3.75us, and 5us at 8MHz
- H-bridge PWM resolution: 0.39%
- Supply voltage: 3V to 5.5V x LS7290 is available in 24-pin DIP, SOIC and TSSOP packages.

LSI/CSI's Quadrature Counter Packs 4-Axes Support in a Single Chip (with Non-Quadrature Multi-Mode Counting Capability)
Posted Apr 22 2008
LSI/CSI introduces LS7566R, the latest addition to its incremental encoder interface family of ICs. It provides an efficient hardware solution for extracting position data directly from the quadrature outputs of as many as four encoder units. The input quadrature clocks from encoders are digitally filtered for elimination of noise and errors arising out of encoder dither, providing high level of reliability. Communications to host processors are facilitated by a 3-state octal bus and an interrupt protocol with selections from a pool of marker flags.

Step Dimmer IC with AGC Touch Control by LSI/CSI
Posted Apr 22 2008

The LS7541 is the main component for built-in or screw-in touch-adapter lamp modules that convert any metallic part of a lamp to a touch pad for control of lighting intensity. The AGC (Automatic Gain Control) feature of the LS7541 allows the modules to convert any size lamp to touch control, independent of line plug polarity. The touch-adapter modules provide lamp owners with ease of use and energy savings while eliminating the need for costly multi-filament bulbs. Touch-adapter modules compatible with 50Hz/60Hz AC Line frequencies and any AC Line voltage can be produced using the LS7541.

A Powerful Multi-Mode Counter Interfaces with Incremental Encoders
Posted Oct 15 2007
LSI/CSI introduces the LS7766, a robust addition to its family of encoder interface and motion control ICs. The LS7766 supersedes it's rivals in versatility and system throughput. Available in both single-axis or dual-axis versions, it has a count range of 32-bits to support applications where large magnitudes of data are involved. It's configurable Octal/Hex parallel IO bus enhances the system throughput by a factor of two over it's predecessors. Its many configurable counting modes relieves the host micro-controller of various control and data formatting tasks reducing the burden on it's resources.

LSI/CSI's LS7366 32-bit Quadrature Counter with Serial (SPI) Interface Offers Multi-mode Programmability
Filed under:
The LS7366 is an Integrated Circuit for decoding and counting quadrature clocks directly from Incremental Encoders. It provides for a dedicated solution to position and displacement tracking at 40x10 6/sec line rate (at 5V) from the encoder and a count limit of 2 32. Its serial interface (SPI) greatly reduces the required IO wire count as compared to a parallel bus structure. It can also operate with non-quadrature clock signals and provides various counting modes for signal conditioning. The LS7366 operates over the voltage range of 3V to 5.5V.
Programming of the LS7366 and all communications between itself and a host controller are made with four simple instructions: READ_reg, WRITE_reg, LOAD_reg and CLEAR_reg. The functional modes are controlled with two bytes of data written into two on-chip Mode Registers.
The configurable modes are:
-Quadrature/non-quadrature count inputs
-Quad cycle resolution selection by factor of x1, x2 or x4
