Rotary knife systems are widely used to cut, seal or perforate material moving along a conveyor. A rotary knife system consists of a cylinder with a knife blade fastened along the longitudinal axis. As the cylinder rotates, it cuts the material passing underneath it. During the cut, the tangential knife velocity must match the linear speed of the material. During the rest of the revolution, the knife must either speed up or slow down to be ready for the next cut.

These custom high-precision micropositioning systems will be employed to align the secondary reflectors in 25 twelve-meter telescopes - the North American portion of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array Project (ALMA) radio telescope. ALMA is an international joint effort to build the world's most sensitive radio telescope, in Chile's Atacama Desert, 16,500 feet above sea level. Eventually, an array of up to 64 antennas will work together as one giant virtual telescope and provide a spatial resolution 10 times higher than the Hubble Space Telescope.

Engineers One-stop Accuracy and Compactness When engineers at Fujifilm Electronic Imaging Ltd. were developing an A3 low cost scanner they had three specific design requirements. The drive for the scanner and focus mechanisms had to offer: Excellent repeatability - without jitter - in a very compact space envelope Fujifilm Electronic Imaging Ltd. engineers had achieved success on previous scanner designs using a linear actuation system comprising a high precision rack and a separate linear ball track, but space was so constrained in the new scanner that this option was no longer open to them. Engineers at Reliance had no hesitation in recommending a suitable alternative solution. A component which not only took care of both the bearing and actuation functions in one fell swoop, but also, because of its unusual design, one which could accommodate slight misalignments in the system with no loss of image quality.
