LSI/CSI announces the addition of five new devices to its family of Quadrature Clock Converter ICs. Designated LS7082N1, LS7083N, LS7084N, LS7183N and LS7184N, these devices are designed to interface between incremental encoders and counting devices by converting the encoder quadrature outputs into directional up/down clocks or clock and direction signals for driving the counting devices. When interfaced with microcontrollers, these devices can free up the resources of a microcontroller by relieving its computational burden used for decoding the quadrature signals. This is especially true at high speeds where the microcontroller becomes an unwieldy tool in performing the task effectively.

32-bit Quadrature Counter with Serial (SPI) Interface Offers Multi-Mode Programmability
LSI/CSI announces the expansion of their line of Encoder Interface/Quadrature Counter ICs with the addition of the LS7366R, an Integrated Circuit for decoding and counting quadrature clocks directly from Incremental Encoders. According to Pete Visconti, VP Sales and Marketing, "A huge advantage is gained by our customers in that the LS7366R provides for a dedicated solution to position and displacement tracking at 40x106/sec line rate (at 5V) from the encoder and a count limit of 232. Its serial interface (SPI) greatly reduces the required IO wire count as compared to a parallel bus structure." It can also operate with non-quadrature clock signals and provides various counting modes for signal conditioning. The LS7366R operates over the voltage range of 3V to 5.5V.

Precision, Low Cost, Stepper Motor Controller ICs for Bipolar and Unipolar Motors
![]() LSI/CSI announces the availability of three new high performance stepper motor controller ICs. Designated LS8297, LS8297CT and LS8397, these ICs can replace the expensive L297 in all applications, while providing additional features not available in L297. According to Pete Visconti, LSI's VP Sales and Marketing, all these devices offer half-step and full-step sequences in both normal drive and wave drive modes similar to the L297. In addition the LS8297CT and the LS8397 offer correction for the torque-ripple, not provided in L297 half-step sequence. A power saving holding-torque mode is also available in LS8397 for maintaining the drivers at a reduced power level when the motor is not turning. Four phase outputs and two inhibit outputs are provided for driving external H-bridge drivers, allowing for the selection of a standard driver, such as the popular L298 or an application specific custom driver. An external reference voltage, in conjunction with the winding current sense voltages, regulate the PWM duty cycles of the driver outputs. One of two decay modes, fast-decay and slow-decay, can be selected to suit the characteristics of the motor winding. ...More >> A Powerful Family of Multi-Mode Counter ICs with Interfaces for Incremental Encoders
![]() LSI/CSI introduces the LS7766, a robust addition to its family of encoder interface and motion control ICs. The LS7766 supersedes its rivals in versatility and system throughput. Available in either single-axis, or dual-axis versions, it has a count range of 32-bits to support applications where large magnitudes of data are involved. Its configurable Octal/Hex parallel IO bus enhances the system throughput by a factor of two over its predecessors. Its many configurable counting modes relieve the host micro-controller of various control and data formatting tasks reducing the burden on its resources. The LS7766 can directly interface with an incremental encoder. The quadrature signals from the encoder are validated with internal digital filters to eliminate errors from induced noise and encoder dither, providing a high level of reliability. The filtered signals are decoded for clock and direction before applying to the 32-bit counter. Alternatively, the count inputs can be configured to function in the non-quadrature mode if encoder interface is not required. ...More >>Step Dimmer IC with AGC Touch Control by LSI/CSI
